본문 A.Players in the
market There are 3 main clusters of players in wireless
industry. i.Mobile-network operators In the past, mobile-network operators
were the ones that provided platforms, especially for cell phones. However, as
Apple, Nokia, and RIM came up with their own platforms for cell phones,
mobile-network operators are now facing a great challenge. Still,
operating-systems companies have to cooperate with mobile-network operators such
as AT&T in U.S., or KT in Korea. But, unlike before, operating-systems
companies’ power has grown, while mobile-network operators’ power has been
reduced. ii.Operating-Systems Company Operating-systems company provides
the platform that enables programs to function properly and smoothly. The
competitiveness of operating-systems is judged by ‘how widely it is adopted by
users.’ As we could see from the case of Microsoft’s Windows and Apples’
Macintosh, operating-systems is highly affected by the network effect.
Therefore, it is very important that which system or standard does majority of
people use. However, nowadays most major and competitive operating-systems
companies are also focusing on contents that can be provided. Apple was the
first company to start this competition. If one can develop a high-quality
contents that are not compatible with other company’s operating-system, then it
can allure and lock-in more customers. iii.Device makers Device makers are
manufacturing companies that produce hard-wares. These companies would
concentrate on the technology issues such as LED, LCD, or AMOLED. Also they
would focus on the design and capacity of devices. Originally, device makers
and operating-systems providers were separated. Also, most customers’ purchase
decisions were made based on the hard-ware, rather than the soft-ware. However,
as portable devices got smarter than ever before, especially cell phones,
customers are now more concerned on the quality of contents that they could
enjoy through devices. And this maximized the importance of Operating-systems
company. B.Current industry status Currently the great shift of power is
going on in wireless industry. As most of the devices got smarter, and enables
customers to do many things that we were only able to do by PCs, the contents
and OS for mobile devices got important than ever before. Who can provide
more high-quality contents and whose devices can provide the biggest
convergence, emerged as key success factors in this field. In terms of above
two factors, no one can deny that currently Apple is the leader. Starting from
iTune and AppStore, Apple has built their reputation as a high-quality contents
provider. Also by providing product lines of MP3(iPod), smart phone(iPhone) and
tablet PC(iPad), Apple has achieved a convergence among different types of
mobile devices as well. No other company has achieved such an accomplishment
like Apple yet, but companies like Microsoft or Google are trying hard to catch
up and outperform Apple.
5.5 FORCES (Why did you choose O-S as an
industry?) NEW ENTRANTS => weak Considering the importance of
operating-systems company in the value chain of wireless industry, we can say
that there is no firm that can prevail global wireless industry except the big
three companies – Apple, Microsoft and Google. (Why?)
